Greetings, Precious Prayer Igniters! QUESTION: What happens when fishermen become fishers of men? ANSWER: Souls receiving Christ’s salvation become the best catches! đŸŽŁđŸ”„

“And He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.’”  Matthew 4:19 ESV

Our Salvation CatchMy nine-year-old grandson, Caleb, made the prize catch of the night!

I had an awesome salvation adventure experience with my grandson, Caleb!

For two years, our dear friend, Captain Sammy, had been trying to get my (now) nine-year-old grandson and me out fishing on Lake Calcasieu in Louisiana. And last month, that time finally came. Not only is Captain Sammy an extraordinary fisherman, but he’s also one of the greatest PRAYER IGNITERS I know!

Fourteen years ago, Sammy attended a one-hour prayer breakout session I was leading at a Men’s Advance. That day, he caught the daily PRAY NOW adventure with Jesus:  “How can I pray for you?”

Fortunately, he’s been “casting” that question into people’s lives ever since. And little did we know, on this fishing adventure fourteen years later, that God would remind us all of what fishing is really about!

Sometimes you go fishing for fish, and other times, God has another catch in mind.

On Tuesday afternoon, July 14th, eight fishermen set out onto the lake. Caleb was the youngest at nine years old, and I had the privilege of being the oldest at 71! It was the first time my grandson and I had ever gone fishing together. So, Caleb and I climbed aboard with our guide, Joshua.

Although the fish weren’t biting much at first, God was. Because as the afternoon slowly unfolded, so did Joshua’s story! He shared that he’d grown up intermittently Catholic but had largely walked away from faith after getting married eight years earlier. Recently, however, he and his wife had hit a serious bump in their marriage. And with two young children and real struggles at home, something began stirring inside him.

He shared that he had started listening to a podcast. In turn, the podcast caused him to start thinking about God.

Then, he eventually started seeking God. And, without any of us realizing it when we launched that afternoon, God had already been preparing the waters of his heart!

The sun began sinking toward the Louisiana horizon, so we began heading home after catching only eight or nine fish.

As I sat in that boat with my grandson and Joshua, I took in the beauty of nature. The breathtaking colors of the evening sky surrounded us. And then, quietly and unmistakably in that moment, I sensed the heart of God: “You need to catch this one for Me, My son.”

Suddenly, the fishing strategy changed. The rods, the bait, and even the fish didn’t matter, because the fisherman became a fisher of men! And over the next fifteen minutes, Caleb and I had the extraordinary joy of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ clearly with Joshua!

Then came the salvation question:

“Joshua, would you like to surrender your life to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?” He readily said, “YES,” right there, in a fishing boat on Lake Calcasieu, with the sun setting behind us! So, we had the first-hand joy of leading Joshua into a deep, wholehearted prayer of surrender to Jesus Christ!đŸ”„

Joshua received Christ's salvation while fishing!Joshua, our wonderful fishing guide!

I asked him afterward, “Joshua, would you mind if we shared the good news with everyone when we get back to the dock?” And his answer came immediately: “Oh, absolutely! Please do!” So, that night, after all the fishing stories had been told, we shared our story

“THE BEST CATCH OF THE NIGHT!”

After hearing our salvation story, a lodge full of fishermen soon joined the celebration already taking place in heaven. “There is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Luke 15:10 ESV

Yet, God wasn’t finished teaching us about fishing, or the harvest! The next morning, we were up at 5:00 and back on the water by 6:00. For hours, we caught nothing. Then Caleb suddenly hooked a beautiful 24-inch speckled trout, the largest speckled trout of our entire trip!

But soon, storm clouds gathered, and the rain began falling. Captain Sammy wisely called us back toward the shore. There, we prayed, and then the rain stopped, so we turned the boats around!

While we were out again, the water suddenly erupted as fish filled the water and birds filled the sky! Without hesitation, we cast, set the hook, and fish came on! We cast again, set the hook, and more fish came on! Again and again, we cast, set, and reeled in on repeat. In approximately one extraordinary hour, the four of us pulled in around thirty fish!

The fishermen's best catch!Just the speckled trout; the rest were catfish! 😂

Captain Sammy said that after twenty years of fishing those waters, he’d never experienced anything quite like it. And standing in the middle of that unbelievable abundance, I could almost hear another voice across another body of water.

“Lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.” John 4:35 ESV

Catching souls is part of God’s ultimate salvation plan; we need only obey the Holy Spirit’s leading.

The night before, God gave us one soul. But the next morning, He gave us a picture and framework for catching fish and becoming fishers of men. The message is as follows:

The fish are there, and the harvest is ready.
Cast the net.
Ask the question.
Share Jesus.
PRAY NOW!

Perhaps the greatest lesson of our fishing adventure was this
We didn’t prepare Joshua’s heart; God already did. And we simply happened to be in the boat when the Holy Spirit said, “Cast here.”

My dear friends, there are “Joshuas” all around us! They’re at work, in restaurants, on airplanes, in our neighborhoods, and yes, even driving fishing boats. 🎣

Their hearts may already be stirring. Or their marriages may be hurting. And even more, their questions may be growing. For instance, God may have been drawing Joshua to Him for months before we ever arrived. Yet our calling remains the same: we’re simply to keep our spiritual eyes open and our hearts listening. Why? Because you never know when Jesus might whisper and say, “You need to catch this one for Me.”

Who will you go fishing for today?

Let’s PRAY NOW!Â đŸ”„â™„ïžđŸ™đŸ™Œ

“Oh Lord, would You have me commit to growing as a reproducing Prayer Igniter just like Captain Sammy?”

This PRAY NOW fishing adventure set off a chain reaction that God used to glorify Himself and bless us all! It went as follows:

Captain Sammy caught PRAY NOW 14 years ago → He took us fishing → Joshua had already been drawn by God → Three generations of Prayer Igniters are effectively in the story: me, Sammy, and nine-year-old Caleb → Joshua surrenders to Christ → Then God gives us a literal visual parable of the harvest the following morning!

That is the gold in this story, and that’s why we’re also fishing for funding! Will you help us multiply our fishing of men? Thank you, again, for your generous support!
